What the hell is wrong with people?!
You've all heard about the looting and all that in the wake of Katrina. As bad as it is, in a situation as chaotic and desperate as that it's basically to be expected.

But then there's the price gouging for gas and necessities. And the con artists setting up fake charities—basically stealing aid from the disaster's victims. And PayPal shutting down SomethingAwful's disaster aid account without explanation. And the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the French Quarter, where 31 staff members remain on hand to keep out refugees, swim in the pool, and dine on girlled tilapia and steaks while the people outside die.

Shit like this that makes me wish I could divorce my species.

The con artists? They've always been there. Most real charities are bloated. Hence my invective to give BLOOD, WATER, and FOOD. Harder to misspend.

PayPal has a good excuse somewhere. It's not good enough.

In addition to the Royal Sonesta (and you have people crack like that, you do), there's also that company fulla libertarians that took it on themselves to reorganize and give aid.

There's also the baser effect of the huge numbers of looters, the vast majority of whom were stealing things they didn't remotely need, who escalated the crisis tenfold by hindering the efforts of police and others who were trying to keep things at a reasonable level of disaster. Apparently most people just become pricks when the chips are down. It's rather disappointing.
